It’s obviously no secret that I am absolutely obsessed with Norway. I mean, how could I not be?

Norway is a place known for pristine waters, friendly people and tiny, picturesque villages that are dwarfed by gorgeous, massive fjord landscapes. It’s also notoriously known for being one of the most expensive countries to visit in the world, hence why a lot of travellers tend to avoid visiting Norway altogether during their Eurotrips.

How To Travel Through Norway On A Budget

I probably have a soft spot for Norway because it was my first solo travel experience, but there are so many more reasons that drew me to “Fjord Nation”.

Norway is stunning, awe-inspiring and down-right amazing on every level.

Yes, it’s expensive, but if you’re smart about your money and research a ton in advance, you can definitely make it fit even the tightest budgets.

Here are some tips for travelling through Norway on a budget without skimping on experiencing the beauty that Norway has to offer.

Research And Shop Around For Flights

When booking flights, I tend to always use Kayak because it searches all travel sites for the cheapest flights, which essentially, is what you want. Most flights will land in Oslo, but if you plan on being in another part of the country, it may be smart to book a one way ticket to Oslo, then buy cheap flights within Norway through Norwegian Air . The savings on flight alone will be staggering.

“Breakfast Included” Will Be Your New Favourite Phrase

I’m going to be real with you guys and say that the accommodations in Norway are not cheap. When searching for a hotel, I always, always, ALWAYS use Booking.com because if you create an account and give enough hotel reviews when you stay places booked through the site, they award you by bumping your status up to “Genius Level”, which unlocks a ton of hotel deals. The site also mentions if breakfast is included with your stay and in a country that is pricey as Norway, you’ll save loads of money on breakfast by filling up at the buffet. Trust me, you and your wallet will thank me. I made the mistake and went to Starbucks once where a coffee and a croissant cost me, get ready for this…$17 CAD!

Book Trains/Transit In Advance

You’ll save a ton of cash if you book your train tickets well in advance. Sites like NSB are great for booking your trains and the site is easy to navigate. and you can book train travel up to 90 days in advance. The train system is extensive in Norway and they are almost always on time. The NSB site also has a neat little “punctuality” feature on their homepage, so you can check the status of your train. Today’s says that 88% of trains are on time. That’s pretty good, considering it is winter right now and there’s probably loads of snow on the tracks.

Try Not To Eat At Restaurants Too Often

Food in Norway is really pricey. Don’t get me started on the price on alcohol. A pint of beer will probably run you about $14 CAD. No, that is NOT a typo. While I was in Norway, I probably only drank 4 beers the whole trip. After seeing how much of my budget was gone after 4 drinks, I decided it wasn’t worth it and stuck with water for the most part. After paying $6-8 CAD for a bottle of water one day, I moved to tap water. Norway has some of the freshest water in the WORLD, so don’t be afraid to drink the water. You can literally drink it from a stream over there, you’ll be fine and save tons of money while keeping hydrated. Another way to save money on food and snacks…Bring your own from home and pack them in your luggage. I always hit up the bulk food store before a trip and load up on granola bars, nuts etc for cheap, healthy and easy snacking on the road. Don’t let the prices of Norway scare you from dining out though. Treat yourself to a nice lunch with a stellar fjord view if you want. I sure did and was NOT disappointed. I literally ate the freshest salmon I’ve ever had in my life while visiting the small village of Flåm.

Get Outside And Enjoy Nature

There is no better and cheaper way to enjoy Norway than to be one with nature and wander around the many hiking trails which are surrounded by massive gorgeous fjords. Even within cities like Bergen, you can hike up Mount Fløyen for spectacular views of the city below. If you feel like taking the funicular up like I did, you could do that too. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s a really cool experience. Once at the top, you have endless amount of hiking trails to wander on and the views are priceless themselves. If you take the Flåmsbana train to the tiny village of Flåm, once there, you can walk for miles along the water while gazing up at the fjords surrounding you. I’ve never had a better time than walking through Flåm for hours and hours while being totally mesmerized by nature.

I really hope that travellers, no matter the size of their wallet, give Norway a chance. Don’t be afraid to go because of the prices because once you are there and plan properly, it is definitely doable as part of your next Eurotrip. Once you see how beautiful Norway is, I can assure you that you’ll be planning your next visit, even before you leave. I know I did! xo

    1. Hi Agness! Yes!! You definitely can travel there on a budget. I was actually having this conversation with someone last night about how people my age are always saying they don’t have enough money to travel to places, but yet they are going out every weekend. Putting small amounts of money aside every month will definitely get you to Norway faster than you know it! 🙂 🙂
